Supporting Sustainable Construction and Engineering Education Through Pervious Concrete

Abacus actively supports sustainable construction practices and engineering education through its sponsorship of the Pervious Concrete Competition, organized by the SUE ACI Student Chapter in collaboration with the EPU ACI Student Chapter and held on March 9, 2023, at Erbil Polytechnic University. The event brought together civil engineering students from universities across Kurdistan, fostering academic collaboration and hands-on learning in sustainable engineering.

The competition focused on pervious concrete, a key sustainable construction material that enhances stormwater management by allowing water infiltration, reducing surface runoff, and supporting groundwater recharge. Pervious concrete is widely applied in sidewalks, parking areas, parks, and low-traffic roads, making it an essential component of environmentally responsible infrastructure design.

By supporting and sponsoring this scientific competition, Abacus contributed to engineering education support by enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world construction challenges. This initiative reflects our commitment to advancing sustainability in civil engineering, encouraging innovation, and strengthening the link between academic learning and professional practice.

In recognition of this contribution, Abacus received an official appreciation award from the Presidency of Erbil Polytechnic University and the Deanship of Erbil Technical College of Engineering, acknowledging our role in promoting scientific research, supporting education, and serving society. Such initiatives demonstrate the importance of collaboration between academic institutions, student organizations, and industry partners in developing skilled engineers and advancing sustainable engineering solutions that support long-term environmental and educational development in the region.
